Action Learning is a powerful way of creating a step change in leadership performance. Traditional leadership development approaches give managers thought provoking models and a language for discussing the way they do things. However some managers remain stuck in their habitual way of approaching situations. Action Learning provides a structured environment in which 6-8 peers can meet regularly to air their own, current management issues and focus on leadership development at the same time. The manager can learn by talking with a group of peers about a current situation or dilemma he or she faces. Experienced and Senior Managers find the attention and challenge provided by their peers extremely powerful. The Action Learning facilitator ensures that the focus of the sessions is on the individual manager's role in the situation he or she is describing.
These targets are worked on throughout the Action Learning sessions, and reviewed at regular intervals. Tutorials in key topics such as leadership styles or influencing with impact are presented to provoke different angles for discussing live issues. Managers are also encouraged to present to each other on issues of interest (e.g. market trends, key internal initiatives). This increases mutual respect and understanding, and provides extra stimulation.
